RGB, RGBW and RGBCCT are chip names, but the number that actually drives cost, wiring and controller choice is the channel count behind the name. Before comparing products, work out whether the brief needs colour temperature shift only, full colour only, or both together — then the channel count picks itself, and the product follows from that.

The Channel Ladder

Each step up adds a capability the step below doesn't have — and a controller requirement that goes with it.

2
CCT Tunable White
Warm White + Cool White
Shifts colour temperature between warm and cool white. No colour mixing, but the highest white quality in the range. Needs a 2-channel CCT controller or DALI DT8.
3
RGB
Red + Green + Blue
Full colour mixing and dynamic chases, but mixed white from RGB reads cooler and less accurate than a dedicated white channel. Needs a 3-channel RGB controller.
4
RGB + WW
Red + Green + Blue + Warm White
Adds a dedicated warm white LED alongside RGB — a usable ambient white without relying on colour mixing. Needs a 4-channel RGBW controller.
5
RGB + CCT
Red + Green + Blue + Cool White + Warm White
Full colour mixing plus independent tunable white in one strip — replaces a separate CCT and RGB installation. Needs a 5-channel RGBCCT controller or DALI DT8 with full colour extension.

Colour Temperature Range on Tunable Strips

The 2 and 5-channel strips both carry tunable white. Range depends on which variant is specified:

2-in-1 vs 3CCT — Same Channel Count, Different Behaviour

Both are 2-channel strips, but 2-in-1 (dual white) blends warm and cool white continuously for smooth CCT drift, while 3CCT switches between three fixed presets. Specify 2-in-1 for circadian or human-centric briefs; 3CCT is enough where three fixed scenes cover the need.

Controller check before ordering: confirm the channel count first, then match the controller — 2-channel needs a CCT controller or DALI DT8, 3-channel needs an RGB controller, 4-channel needs an RGBW controller, and 5-channel needs an RGBCCT controller or DALI DT8 with full colour extension. Ordering the strip before confirming the controller is the most common spec error on colour-changing projects.

Specification Advantages

🎚️
Four Channel Tiers, One Range
2, 3, 4 and 5-channel strips from a single supplier — no need to source colour and white separately.
24V — Long Run Ready
Constant 24V across the entire range. Up to 10m per channel before power injection is required.
🌡️
2200K–6500K Coverage
Full tunable white spectrum on 2 and 5-channel strips, plus a narrow 2200K–4000K variant for warm-only briefs.
🔵
DALI DT8 Compatible
2-channel CCT and 5-channel RGBCCT strips integrate directly with DALI DT8 drivers for BMS control.
📐
5mm to 12mm PCB
Every channel tier is available across multiple PCB widths to fit standard aluminium profile channels.
🏅
CRI 80+ Consistent
Colour-binned across the range so adjoining sections on long runs match without visible seams.

Common Selection Questions

Why decide by channel count instead of by product name?
Product names like RGB, RGBW and RGBCCT describe chip construction, but the decision that actually matters is how many independent channels the controller and driver need to run. A 2-channel need (just shifting white warmth) has a completely different controller, wiring and cost implication than a 5-channel need (full colour plus tunable white). Starting from channel count avoids over-specifying a 5-in-1 strip where a 2-channel CCT strip would have done the job.
What is 2-in-1 versus 3CCT on a tunable white strip?
Both are 2-channel CCT strips, but 2-in-1 (dual white) blends warm and cool white in continuously variable proportions for smooth, stepless CCT control. 3CCT switches between three fixed presets — typically warm, neutral and cool white. Specify 2-in-1 for human-centric or circadian lighting; 3CCT is sufficient where three fixed scenes cover the brief.
When is a 3-channel RGB strip enough, and when do I need more?
Pure 3-channel RGB is enough when the strip is purely a colour accent that will never double as a good-quality white light source — its mixed white reads visibly cooler and less accurate than a dedicated white channel. If the same fixture also needs to serve as ambient white lighting, move up to 4-channel RGB+WW or 5-channel RGB+CCT.
What does the 4th channel add in an RGB+WW strip?
The 4th channel is a dedicated warm white LED alongside red, green and blue in the same chip. When a fixture needs to switch from a colour scene to a plain ambient white without relying on RGB mixing, this channel delivers a noticeably better white than mixed RGB white — without the cost of a full 5-channel system.
What controller does each channel configuration need?
2-channel CCT needs a 2-channel CCT controller or DALI DT8. 3-channel RGB needs a 3-channel RGB controller. 4-channel RGB+WW needs a 4-channel RGBW controller. 5-channel RGB+CCT needs a 5-channel RGBCCT controller or DALI DT8 with full colour extension. Confirm the channel count before selecting the controller, not after.
Can a single project mix 2, 3, 4 and 5-channel strips?
Yes — this is normal on hospitality and mixed-use projects. A guest room might run 2-channel CCT tunable in the ceiling cove, a 5-channel RGB+CCT strip behind the headboard for mood scenes, and 3-channel RGB in a corridor feature wall. Each zone is specified against its own lighting brief rather than forcing one channel configuration project-wide.
