What Is Fiber Optic Light Mesh?

Fiber optic light mesh is a woven fabric made entirely from PMMA (plastic optical fiber) side glow strands. Unlike rigid LED panels or strip lights, the mesh is pliable — it can hang freely, be folded into undulating sculptures, stretched across ceiling frames, or wrapped around structural forms. When one end of the fiber bundle is connected to an illuminator engine, every strand in the mesh glows continuously along its length, producing a luminous surface that shimmers and shifts with each colour change.

How the Mesh Works

PMMA fibers woven in a grid — one end bundled and inserted into the illuminator port. Light travels through each fiber and emits along the full length of every strand, turning the entire mesh surface into a glowing, colour-changing fabric.

Inherently safe — no electricity in the mesh itself. Only light travels through the PMMA fibers. The mesh can be installed in close proximity to water features, in children's sensory rooms, event drapery, or crowded spaces with no shock hazard and no heat emission at the fiber surface.

Compatible Nucleo Illuminators

The fiber optic mesh connects to any Nucleo illuminator engine via a bundled ferrule termination. Choose your engine based on mesh size and desired effect:

NLE-18
18W · 20mm port · up to 600 pts (0.75mm) · RGBW / Single / CCT / DMX
NLE-36 Dual
18W×2 · Dual 20mm ports · drive two meshes simultaneously
NLE-45
45W · 30mm port · up to 1200 pts · for larger mesh panels
NLE-5S
Shooting star effect · twinkling light chaser for dynamic mesh installations
NLE-90

How to Install Fiber Optic Mesh

1

Plan the installation frame

Decide whether the mesh will hang freely, be stretched across a ceiling grid, or draped over a form. Mark fixing points. For suspended installations, use stainless wire or hook fixings at the top edge of the mesh.

2

Mount the illuminator

Install the Nucleo illuminator engine at a fixed point accessible for power connection. The engine must be within the fiber bundle run length of the mesh — typically 1–3 metres. Ensure ventilation around the engine.

3

Connect the fiber bundle

Insert the pre-bundled ferrule end of the mesh into the illuminator port. Tighten the locking collar finger-tight. No tools required. Ensure the ferrule is fully seated before powering on.

4

Shape and dress the mesh

With the illuminator off, hang, drape, or shape the mesh into the desired form. The PMMA fibers are flexible but should not be bent sharper than a 50mm radius to avoid micro-fracture.

5

Power on and programme

Connect the illuminator to power, select your colour mode (RGBW, static, twinkling, DMX scene), and make final adjustments to the mesh drape. The mesh itself requires no further maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fiber optic light mesh?
A fiber optic light mesh is a woven panel made from PMMA (plastic optical fiber) side glow strands. When connected to an illuminator engine, every fiber in the mesh glows along its full length, creating a luminous fabric surface. It is flexible, lightweight, and carries no electricity — only light travels through the fibers.
What fiber specs does the Nucleo Fiber Optic Mesh use?
The Nucleo Fiber Optic Mesh uses 105 strands of 0.75mm PMMA side glow fiber per mesh unit. Side glow fiber emits light along its entire length (not just the tip), which gives the mesh its characteristic full-surface, even glow.
What illuminator do I need for the fiber optic mesh?
The mesh works with all Nucleo illuminator engines — NLE-18, NLE-36 Dual Port, NLE-45, NLE-5S Shooting Star, and NLE-90. Illuminators are sold separately. Your Nucleo team will recommend the right engine based on mesh size and desired effect.
Can the fiber optic mesh be cut to custom sizes?
Yes. Standard panel sizes are available from stock and custom cut-to-size is offered on request. Share your project dimensions with Nucleo and we will supply accordingly.
Is the fiber optic mesh safe near water or in children's spaces?
Yes. No electricity passes through the mesh itself — only light is transmitted via the PMMA fibers. This makes it safe to install near water features, in sensory rooms, children's play areas, or anywhere heat or shock hazard is a concern. Only the illuminator unit at one end carries electrical connections.
Can the mesh be shaped into 3D sculptures?
Yes. Because the mesh is fully flexible it can be formed into organic 3D shapes — hanging clouds, abstract sculptures, spirals, or cascading canopies. PMMA fibers should not be bent tighter than a 50mm radius to prevent micro-fracture, but within that limit the mesh can take almost any form.
Does Nucleo supply fiber optic mesh across India?
Yes. Nucleo supplies fiber optic mesh pan-India from Mumbai. Projects have been delivered to Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and other cities. Contact us for shipping timelines and bulk project quantities.
