COB LED Lights
Chip on Board Technology — Seamless Light, Zero Dark Spots, Ultra-High CRI for Every Lighting Application
What Is COB LED Technology?
COB — Chip on Board — is an advanced LED manufacturing technique where dozens of individual LED chips are mounted directly onto a single ceramic or aluminium substrate, electrically connected, and encapsulated together under a single phosphor layer. The result is a single, large, luminous surface that behaves like a miniature, ultra-efficient light source.
The COB Advantage — Why It Outperforms
Four fundamental reasons why COB LED is the technology of choice for quality-first lighting projects.
Seamless Light Surface
All chips share one phosphor layer, creating a single homogeneous emitting surface. No visible LED dots, no striping effect on walls or ceilings — just smooth, even light.
Superior Color Accuracy
COB architecture allows tighter bin-matching of chips, yielding consistent color temperatures and CRI values above 90 Ra — with premium modules achieving >97 Ra, close to natural daylight.
Efficient Heat Dissipation
Direct substrate mounting reduces thermal resistance. Heat is conducted away from chips faster, lowering junction temperature and extending LED lifespan beyond 50,000 hours.
Higher Lumen Density
Packing multiple chips into a small footprint creates extreme lumen density — making it possible to achieve 3,000+ lumens from a 30mm diameter module. Ideal for tight-aperture spotlights.
COB LED vs. SMD LED
Understanding where each technology excels helps specify the right solution for each lighting challenge.
🟡 COB LED — When Quality Matters
- Single uniform emitting surface — no visible dots or pixelation
- CRI up to 97+ Ra — true-to-life color reproduction
- Superior lumen density in compact modules
- Lower operating temperature = longer life
- Precise optical control with add-on lenses (15°–120°)
- Ideal for spotlights, downlights, retail, galleries, hospitality
- Flicker-free dimming to 1% with COB drivers
- 50,000 hour rated life at L70
⬜ SMD LED — Where It Has Its Place
- Individual chips visible at close range in strip lighting
- Standard CRI typically 80 Ra (premium ≤90 Ra)
- Better for RGB/RGBW color mixing applications
- Flexible strip form factor for curved surfaces
- More cost-effective for linear wash lighting
- Ideal for cove lights, backlighting, color-changing effects
- Wider product availability across wattage ranges
- Standard 30,000–40,000 hour lifespan

Installation Guide

⬇️ COB Recessed Downlight Install
- Mark the cut-out position on the ceiling using the template provided (typical sizes: 65mm, 75mm, 90mm, or 120mm diameter). Ensure at least 150mm of plenum depth above the fixture.
- Cut the aperture using a hole saw. Verify that no structural members, conduit, or plumbing obstruct the path above.
- Connect the driver output wires to the COB module connections inside the fixture housing. Observe polarity markings.
- Connect the driver input to the 220V AC supply through a ceiling rose or junction box — ensure power is OFF at the MCB before connecting mains.
- Insert the driver into the plenum above the ceiling. Push the COB fixture body up through the aperture — spring clips engage automatically and hold flush against the ceiling.
- Restore power. Commission the dimmer (if fitted) and verify smooth 0–100% dimming performance. Adjust beam angle lens if alternate optic is required.
🎯 COB Track Spotlight Install
- Install the track rail using the mounting brackets supplied. For single-circuit track, connect L, N, and Earth at the live end cap. Ensure the track is correctly rated for total connected load.
- Slide the COB track adapter into the track channel. Rotate 90° clockwise to lock the electrical contacts and secure the fixture mechanically.
- Aim the spotlight head to the desired target position. Tighten the horizontal swivel and vertical tilt locking screws to maintain the angle.
- To change the beam optic: unclip the anti-glare shield, swap the TIR lens insert (15°/24°/36°/60°), and reattach the shield.
- Power on the track circuit. Verify the COB lamp ignites without flicker. Allow 5 minutes of warm-up before making final aiming adjustments.
- For multi-fixture track systems, balance load evenly across both sides of the live end feed. Do not exceed the track's rated amperage.
💡 Light That Does Justice to What It Illuminates
The purpose of lighting is not simply to make a space visible — it is to make it look its best. In jewellery, a diamond should fire with every facet alive. In a restaurant, food should look as delicious as it tastes. In a clothing store, a red dress should look red — not orange-red, not pink-red, but exactly red. COB LED technology, with its superior CRI and seamless beam quality, is the engineering answer to these demands.
Nucleo's COB LED range is built on the conviction that high-quality light is not a luxury — it is a specification requirement. We supply the same chip packages used in premium European and Japanese luminaire brands, assembled and tested in India, available at project-viable pricing for the Indian market. From a single downlight replacement to a 500-fixture hospitality project, our lighting team provides full technical support at every stage.
